The Karakoram is the throne room of the mountain gods — four eight-thousanders in a hundred-kilometre stretch, glaciers longer than any outside the polar regions, and Wakhi, Burushaski and Balti villages perched on impossible ledges. Our hosts here have been welcoming travelers since long before the road came in.
