What our purpose is
Wandering Yaks is a Hunza-based mountain travel agency. Our purpose is simple: run host-led trips that support local people, leave villages and trails better than we found them, and never treat wildlife or the high country as disposable.
That means hiring and buying local across the Karakoram, Hindukush, Himalayas, and Pamir wherever the route allows — and refusing the shortcuts that fill valleys with noise, plastic, and crowds these places cannot carry.
Three commitments we run every trip by
Not a separate CSR brochure — the operating rules for journeys out of Hunza and into the ranges we call home.
Support local
Named hosts, guides, cooks, jeep drivers, and porters from the valleys we walk. Village kitchens and homestays over imported logistics whenever the route allows. Trip money should land where the hospitality happens.
Leave places better
Small groups, seasonal caps, and pack-out discipline on trails and glaciers. We do not sell a village more visitors than it can absorb, and we do not leave plastic, food waste, or camp scars behind.
Do no harm to wildlife & planet
Snow leopards, ibex, markhor, and alpine birds are neighbors, not props. We watch from a distance, never bait or stage encounters, and keep fuel, litter, and noise off the high ground that sustains these ranges.
How we support local
Named local hosts on every trip
You meet the people who live the route — not rented international guides. Hosts, cooks, and crew are hired from Hunza, Baltistan, Chitral, and the valleys each journey actually crosses.
Buy and hire local where we can
Jeeps, porters, homestays, and kitchen supplies come from village partners first. When something must be brought in, we say so — we do not pretend a supply chain is local when it is not.
Money that stays in the mountains
Every published journey lists a community share — the portion of your trip cost that stays with local hosts, cooks, guides, drivers, porters, and homestay families. We show the percentage; we do not bury it in marketing copy.
How we care for place & wildlife
Pace the village can absorb
Group sizes and seasonal limits are set with the places we visit, not with a sales calendar. Routes our team lives in year-round — not routes we rent for a peak month.
Pack out, leave no scar
Waste leaves with us. Homestays and camps aim for zero single-use plastic where practical; kitchens boil and filter drinking water so bottled water is not the default on trail.
Wildlife stays wild
No baiting, no chasing, no staged photo ops. Sightings of snow leopard, ibex, markhor, and other wildlife are quiet, distant, and optional — never guaranteed or forced for a trip photo.
